gas logs baton rougeIt took a while, but it finally happened.  With frost on the ground and temperatures falling below freezing, it’s time to get the fireplace ready for winter.  A warm fire creates the perfect ambience on a cold winter evening, especially around the holidays.  If you have a gas fireplace you now how easy and convenient it is to get a fire started.  But have you ever wondered how long they last?  Obviously, they are more durable than firewood, and with some simple routine maintenance, you can increase their longevity; but it’s important to know when and how to replace your gas logs when the time comes.

How Long Will Gas Logs Last?

The lifespan of your gas logs depends on a few different factors.  The first is the type of material they are made of.  Most gas logs are made of ceramic.  This allows them to withstand the high temperatures of a fire.  Some logs are made of cement.  Cement logs can begin to fade in appearance within 2 to 3 years, depending on use.  The type of gas logs you have will also help to determine how long they will last.  Vented gas log sets can last over 10 years if well taken care of.  Ventless gas logs can also last a long time, however if heavily used, wear can begin to show after 3 to 5 years.  So, the short answer is your gas logs should last several years.  Obviously the higher the quality of the log and the more infrequent use will add time to your log set.

How Do You Replace Gas Logs?

If it’s been 10 years or so, it may be time to consider replacing your gas log set.  Like most things, a lot changes over 10 years.  New designs and different technology is available for gas log sets; so how do you actually replace the logs?

  • Turn off the gas.
  • With gloves on, remove the old logs from the fireplace.
  • Remove the grate from the fireplace with a screwdriver.
  • Disconnect the burner and gas line.
  • Clean out the fireplace.
  • Connect the new logs’ gas line to the burner.
  • Secure the burner and the grate with a screwdriver.
  • Check your new log set for leaks. To do this, turn on your gas and use a spray bottle of soap and water to spray on the gas line connection.  Look for bubbles to form.  If bubbles are present tighten the connection or replace the entire gas line.
