Restoring Patio Cushions after a Baton Rouge Flood

After any major storm or flood, many Baton Rouge residents are concerned about the condition and appearance of their iron or aluminum patio furniture. The wrought iron and aluminum styles of outdoor furniture are popular in South Louisiana due to their function, style, and durability. However, no matter how perfect this furniture may seem, its coating is still prone to wear, damage, and erosion over time. Water and ultraviolet light exposure (sunlight) are the two most detrimental factors to the coating of aluminum and wrought-iron furniture. If the intensity of either of these factors increases, the protective and decorative value of the furniture’s coating will diminish proportionally. In a flood, the furniture is exposed to standing water for a much longer period of time than normal, which magnifies the erosion of the coating on the furniture.

If your iron or aluminum patio furniture changes colors or has any surface imperfections following a flood, we recommend restoring the coating on the furniture. While it is possible to apply the powder coating yourself, we highly recommended that you have a professional apply it for you.

At Casual Creations, we carry out the entire restoration process for you, whether you purchased the furniture from us or not. Additionally, most restoration places require that you both disassemble and deliver the furniture before they recoat it for you. At Casual Creations, we understand how stressful this whole process can be, so we make every effort to do all the “heavy lifting” for you.

Casual Creation's steps for all outdoor furniture restoration projects:

  1. We will pick up the furniture from your home.
  2. We will take the furniture to our shop and disassemble it.
  3. We will take the disassembled furniture to BR Powder Coating for the finish.
  4. We will pick up the recoated furniture.
  5. We will reassemble the furniture.
  6. We will return the refinished furniture to your home.

How to clean the fabric on your outdoor cushions and umbrella after a flood

Since the flood waters of Louisiana do not contain salt water, you can likely clean your fabric with household bleach and water. If you're uncomfortable using straight bleach on the fabric, you can mix the following solution together for speedy application and cleansing:

  • 1 Cup ammonia
  • 1/2 Cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 Cup baking soda
  • 1 Gallon (3.7 liters) water

If your outdoor patio furniture and cushions have been damaged in a flood, Casual Creations can help. Our goal is to simplify the entire restoration process for the home owner.
