Baton Rouge Grilling Safety Tip #2: Check Grill Parts for Rust or Corrosion

CCgrillingsafetytip2Are you preparing to fire up your grill? In the hot, humid Louisiana air, corrosion and rust can quickly affect your grill—if left unchecked.

If you have a charcoal grill, start by checking the grate that holds the coals. These grates can wear through over time and are more easily replaced before they fall apart. If you have a propane grill, check the burners. If your propane burners are corroded, it can lead to an inconsistent flame that leads to uneven heat distribution through the pit.

You also want to check the heat plates—or “heat shields”—above the burners. The heat plates are the most likely to need frequent replacement as they not only absorb heat from the burners, but also get hit from above with grease and fat drippings.

Regardless of whether you use propane or charcoal, the grill itself needs to be checked regularly. This is what comes in direct contact with your food, so any rust or corrosion is unacceptable for a safe, working cooking surface.
